Classic Hot Matcha Latte
A comforting and energizing beverage, this classic matcha latte combines the smooth, earthy notes of matcha with creamy milk, creating a balanced and delightful drink.
Yields: 1 Serving Prep time: 2-3 minutes Cook time: 2-3 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 Teaspoon (about 2g) Matcha Green Tea Powder (Ceremonial or good Culinary Grade)
- 2 Tablespoons Hot Water (around 175∘F/80∘C – not boiling)
- 3/4 Cup Milk of Choice (Cow’s milk, oat milk, almond milk, soy milk all work well)
- 1-2 Teaspoons Sweetener (Honey, maple syrup, sugar, or agave – optional, to taste)
Equipment
- Small bowl or matcha bowl (chawan)
- Bamboo whisk (chasen) or small electric frother/whisk
- Small saucepan or microwave-safe mug (for heating milk)
- Serving mug
Instructions
1. Prepare the Matcha Paste
- Add the Matcha Powder to your small bowl or matcha bowl.
- Pour the hot water (ensure it’s not boiling, as boiling water can make matcha bitter) over the matcha.
- Whisk vigorously with a bamboo whisk (in a ‘W’ or ‘M’ motion) or a small electric frother until the matcha is completely dissolved, smooth, and a light foam forms on the surface. This creates a concentrated matcha paste.
2. Heat and Sweeten the Milk
- In a small saucepan, gently heat your milk of choice over medium-low heat until it’s hot but not boiling (small bubbles may form around the edges). Alternatively, heat the milk in a microwave-safe mug for 60-90 seconds.
- If using, stir in your chosen sweetener into the hot milk until dissolved.
3. Combine and Serve
- Pour the frothed matcha paste into your serving mug.
- Slowly pour the hot, sweetened milk over the matcha paste.
- For a beautiful finish, you can top with extra foam if you’ve frothed your milk.
- Serve immediately and enjoy the creamy goodness!
Tip: For an Iced Matcha Latte, follow step 1, then combine the matcha paste with cold milk, sweetener, and plenty of ice in a glass. Stir well and enjoy!
